Before the First Snow
Every fall, you’ll notice Adams County weather reports start to mention flurries, finding the first snow before we've even found our gloves. It often surprises people, especially when life is already busy with work, family, and appointments. If you take care of a few things ahead of time, a snowy morning won't disrupt your week, whether you're staying home, going to work, or visiting us for a follow-up.
In this part of Pennsylvania, most of us rely on our cars to get around. A quick trip to your mechanic to check the tires, wipers, and battery can help catch small issues before the cold makes them worse. Using a winter blend of washer fluid keeps your windshield clear when the roads are slushy. Many people also keep their gas tank at least half full during the season, which helps ease worries about slow commutes or unexpected delays. Packing a small kit in your trunk adds extra peace of mind. A warm blanket, gloves, ice scraper, folding shovel, phone charger, flashlight, and some water and snacks don't take up much space, and they're helpful if you have to wait for a plow.
Most snow days are spent at home, and having a stocked pantry makes them much easier. Soup, oatmeal, peanut butter, and crackers are simple staples to keep around. If you're in treatment, try to choose foods that are gentle on your stomach. Keeping extra batteries and a few blankets in an easy-to-find spot can make a short power outage less stressful. It's also a good idea to check your medicine cabinet. Looking over your prescriptions about a week before a storm gives you time to request refills, so you won't run low while the driveway is covered in snow. If you use our onsite pharmacy, our staff is happy to help you plan ahead.
Appointment Days
We understand that a lot of planning goes into each appointment, and winter weather can make travel feel uncertain. Saving our office number in your phone, and keeping a copy on the fridge for your family, makes it easy to call us if you have questions when snow is coming. We're always happy to talk with you about the weather and help you decide on the safest plan, whether that's keeping your appointment, moving it, or picking a new day. Some patients also set up a backup ride early in the winter, like a neighbor, a friend from church, or a relative with a reliable car, so an icy morning is less stressful.
When your car, home, and schedule are ready, you can enter the season feeling confident. Our team in Gettysburg is here to support you every step of the way.
