The Kindness We See Every Day
World Kindness Day is November 13, and it has us thinking about how much kindness we witness without ever stopping to name it. We see it every day in our office, and chances are you see it in your own life too.
Picture your first day of treatment. You're sitting in the waiting room, a little nervous, when someone leans over and says it gets easier. Moments like that happen here all the time. Our patients look out for one another in ways that still move our whole team.
Kindness has a way of coming back around, too. Our team has been on the receiving end of kindness more times than we can count, whether it's a thank you note or a plate of cookies left at the front desk. Those moments stay with us long after the workday ends.
Gettysburg has always been this way. This is a town where people know their neighbors and show up when someone needs a hand. If you've lived here a while, you've probably seen it yourself during a big snowstorm or a hard season for a family down the street. For our patients, a meal from a neighbor or a card from a friend can carry them through a long week of treatment.
So how do you pass it along? Honestly, it doesn't take much. It can be as easy as holding the door for the person behind you or sending a text to the neighbor you haven't heard from in a while. If you know someone going through a tough season, skip the "let me know if you need anything" and offer something real, like dinner on Thursday or a ride to an appointment. People find it much easier to say yes to something specific.
Kindness can look like patience, too. The person ahead of you in the checkout line may be carrying more than you know. Maybe they came straight from a long appointment, or they're caring for someone at home on very little sleep. Giving them a little grace costs nothing and might be the best part of their day. As the holiday season picks up, a patient smile or a kind word can go further than you think.
This World Kindness Day, we hope you'll notice the good happening around you and add a little of your own. To every patient, caregiver, team member, and neighbor who has brought kindness through our doors, thank you. You make PCSRI what it is.
